The Sentinels - Young Adult Ministry

The Sentinel ministry of Kansas City Bible Church is focused on establishing a solid doctrinal foundation in the lives of young adults so they are not moved away from the hope of the gospel by the ways of the world. (Col 2:6-8, Col 1:22-23)

A sentinel is a soldier that stands watch. They guard against surprise attacks from the enemy. In today's world, young adults are faced with many challenges and pressures that will attack their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and his Word. Those challenges usually stem from college and the work place. The young adult is in a pivotal time of transition in their lives. They are going from the teenage years to making decisions on higher education, career and marriage for most. Making Biblical decisions is crucial if the young adult wants to be everything they can be for the Lord. The Sentinel ministry at KCBC is geared to helping young adults to continue to grow in their walk with the Lord and to avoid the pitfalls of the world that will hinder that walk.

The 2012 vision for the Sentinel ministry comes from the overall vision for the ministry in Colossians 2:6 where the Apostle Paul talks about being rooted and built up in Christ. This year we want to focus on building on the foundation of Christ in our lives and in the lives of others. Thus, we want to be wise masterbuilders like Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 3:10.

1 Corinthians 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

The following is a brief break down on 1Co.3:10 that will lay the ground work for the Sentinel 2012 vision of Developing Wise Masterbuilders.

I. Vocation (1Co.15:10, Col.4:5-6)

The Sentinels will need to utilize the grace of God and the wisdom of God from the word of God in order to build truth on the foundation of Christ in other lives.

II. Foundation (1 Co.3:11, Mt.7:24-27)

As mentioned in the above point, the only foundation that is solid is that of a personal relationship with Christ. But as indicated in Mt.7:24-27a real relationship with Christ goes beyond just hearing the word of God. A sentinel must apply the word of God to their life as laid out in our doctrine given to us by God through the Apostle Paul.

III. Edification (Eph.4:15-16, 1Co.10:23-24)

A good soldier does not only look out for themselves, but they help each other and those that they are protecting from the enemy. The body of Christ should edify or build up others in their walk with Christ. This really gets down to the heart of the matter for 2012. On a weekly basis I want to see the Sentinels building or edifying their brothers and sisters in Christ by the building blocks of the word of God.

IV. Consideration (Col.4:17, Hag.1:1-8)

Finally, the last thing that Paul says in 1Co.3:10 is giving us a warning in how we build on our foundation. We need to take heed to see that we are building gold, silver and precious stones on that foundation and not wood, hay and stubble (1Co.3:12-15). My desire is for each Sentinel to take heed to the ministry that they have received in the Lord and that they will not get side tracked by vain things of this life. A Sentinel needs to make sure they are building a solid relationship with the Lord in their lives so they can be used of the Lord in the lives of others.
